Reading Comprehension Questions  

Reading comprehension is an important part of 3rd grade. It is very important that your child is reading every night. Here are some generic questions that you can ask your child to help practice reading comprehension.


  • What is the setting of the story?
  • What is the central message of the story?
  • What key details support the central message of the story?
  • List two character traits to describe the main character. Use details from the story to support your answer.
  • Explain how the character changes throughout the story. 
  • Create a new title for the story.
  • Explain two key ideas from the book.
  • How are paragraphs ___ and ___ connected to each other?
  • How is the book organized? Why do you think the author organized it in this way?
  • Describe the theme of this story.
  • What is the author's purpose of writing this text?
  • Create a flow map showing the important events in sequential order.
  • Compare and contrast two characters from the book. Use details to support your answer.
  • Create a new ending for the story.
